This course provides the basic knowledge needed to be a general computer technician in a vendor-neutral format. The hardware material covers PC hardware and peripherals, networks, mobile devices, virtualization and cloud computing, and troubleshooting computers, peripherals, and network issues. The operating system material covers installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting operating systems, software, security, and operational procedures. This course maps to the CompTIA A+ 220-1101 and 220-1102 certification exams. Objective coverage is marked throughout the course.

This course assumes that you have PC technical knowledge and operating system familiarity, equivalent to having been a PC technician for at least few months.

After completing this course, you will know how to:

  • Apply basic skills as an IT technician, such as methodical troubleshooting, safety procedures, and professional behavior.
  • Identify motherboard and CPU components, install or replace them, and troubleshoot their functions.
  • Identify power supply functions and connectors, install them into a PC, and troubleshoot power issues.
  • Configure BIOS/UEFI firmware, identify and install RAM, and troubleshoot memory issues
  • Compare internal and external expansion buses on a computer, install internal cards, and identify expansion cables and connectors.
  • Distinguish between physical storage technologies, install drives, and troubleshoot storage problems.
  • Connect, configure, and troubleshoot common input-output devices.
  • Choose, install, configure, and troubleshoot common display devices.
  • Identify client operating system features, install Windows and application software, and work with scripts.
  • Manage and troubleshoot operating systems using built-in administrative tools, such as the Windows Control Panel and command-line utilities.
  • Describe network principles, network devices, and internet connection technologies.
  • Identify and categorize common network cables and connectors.
  • Configure and troubleshoot issues related to TCP/IP and other network protocols.
  • Describe common wireless networking standards and encryption methods.
  • Configure and troubleshoot problems with Windows resource sharing and network connections.
  • Identify and use virtualization technology and cloud computing services.
  • Identify types of mobile devices and operating systems, and configure and troubleshoot mobile devices.
  • Recognize common cybersecurity threats, and the security controls which are used to reduce risk.
  • Identify and use security features built into operating systems, as well as security hardware and software used on workstations and networks.
  • Secure workstations and mobile devices against security risks, and troubleshoot common security issues such as malware infection.
  • Configure and secure a SOHO network using consumer-oriented network hardware.
  • Describe common printing technologies, install and maintain printers, and troubleshoot printing issues.
  • Choose or assemble an appropriate computer for a given set of computing needs.
  • Apply best practices in IT operations, including policies, documentation, environment and safety considerations, incident response, and data backups and recovery.
